Thalassemia to formy dziedzicznych zaburzeń krwotoków autosomalnych pochodzących z regionu Morza Śródziemnego. W talasemii zaburzenie wywołane jest osłabieniem i niszczeniem czerwonych krwinek. Thalassemia jest spowodowana odmianami lub brakiem genów, które wpływają na sposób, w jaki organizm wytwarza hemoglobinę. Hemoglobina jest białkiem w krwinkach czerwonych, które przenosi tlen. Osoby z talasemią zmniejszają poziom hemoglobiny i mają mniej krążących krwinek czerwonych niż zwykle, co powoduje łagodną lub ciężką niedokrwistość. Thalassemia występuje w postaci niedokrwistości mikrocyticzej. Thalassemia może powodować poważne komplikacje, w tym przeciążenie żelaza, deformacje kostne i choroby sercowo-naczyniowe.
