Tórshavn jest stolicą i największym miastem Wysp Owczych. Znajduje się w południowej części wschodniego wybrzeża Streymoy. Na północny zachód od miasta leży 347-metrowa góra Húsareyn, a na południowy zachód od 350 m wysokości Kirkjubřreyn. Właściwe miasto ma 13 000 mieszkańców, a większa część miejska liczy 19 000 mieszkańców. Wikingowie założyli swój parlament na półwyspie Tinganes w roku 850 CE. Tórshavn stał się więc stolicą Wysp Owczych i pozostał tak długo. W średniowieczu wąski półwysep wyrastający do morza stanowił główną część Tórshavn. Źródła nie wspominają o zabudowie w Tórshavn aż po Reformacji w 1539 r. Na początku Tórshavn stał się centrum monopolu handlowego wysp, stając się tym samym jedynym miejscem prawnym dla wyspiarzy na sprzedaż i kupno towarów. W 1856 roku zlikwidowano monopol handlowy, a wyspy pozostały otwarte na wolny handel. Miasto wzrosło szybko od przełomu XX wieku w niekwestionowanym administracyjnym, gospodarczym i kulturalnym centrum Wysp Owczych.

Tórshavn is the capital and largest town of the Faroe Islands. It is located in the southern part on the east coast of Streymoy. To the northwest of the town lies the 347-meter high mountain Húsareyn, and to the southwest, the 350-meter high Kirkjubøreyn. The town proper has a population of 13,000, and the greater urban area a population of 19,000. The Vikings established their parliament on the Tinganes peninsula in 850 CE. Tórshavn thus became the capital of the Faroe Islands and has remained so ever since. All through the Middle Ages the narrow peninsula jutting out into the sea made up the main part of Tórshavn. Sources do not mention a built-up area in Tórshavn until after the Reformation in 1539. Early on, Tórshavn became the centre of the islands' trade monopoly, thereby being the only legal place for the islanders to sell and buy goods. In 1856, the trade monopoly was abolished and the islands were left open to free trade. The town has grown rapidly ever since the turn of the 20th century into the undisputed administrative, economic and cultural centre of the Faroes.
