Grasis jest wyspecjalizowanym organem układu odpornościowego. W grasicy dojrzewa komórki T, kluczowe dla adaptacyjnego układu immunologicznego. Każda komórka T atakuje obcą substancję, która identyfikuje się z jej receptorem. Komórki T posiadają receptory, które są generowane przez przypadkowe tasowanie segmentów genu. Po drugie, komórka T poddawana jest "negatywnemu wyborowi" poprzez interakcję z tymodendystyczną komórką dendrytyczną, w wyniku której komórki T o wysokim powinowactwie są eliminowane przez apoptozę, a te z powinowactwem pośrednim przetrwają. Grasis składa się z dwóch identycznych płatów i znajduje się anatomicznie w przedniej górnej śródpiersie, przed sercem i za mostkiem. Histologicznie, każdy płat grasicy można podzielić na środkowy medulla i obwodową korę otoczoną zewnętrzną kapsułką.
