Tocopherole to grupa organicznych związków chemicznych, z których wiele posiada aktywność witaminową E. Ponieważ aktywność witaminowa została po raz pierwszy zidentyfikowana w 1936 roku z czynnika płodności u szczurów, otrzymano nazwę "tokoferol" z greckich słów "τόκος" i "φέρειν", co w sumie oznacza "przeprowadzenie ciąży" kończący "-ol" oznaczający jego status jako alkohol chemiczny. α-tokoferol jest głównym źródłem znajdującym się w suplementach i europejskiej diecie, gdzie głównym źródłem żywności są oliwki i oleje słonecznikowe, a γ-tokoferol jest najczęstszą postacią w diecie amerykańskiej z powodu wyższego spożycia oleju sojowego i kukurydzianego .
