Całkowita wewnętrzna odbicie jest zjawiskiem, które zachodzi, gdy fala propagacyjna uderza w średnią granicę pod kątem większym od określonego kąta krytycznego względem normalnego względem powierzchni. Jeśli współczynnik załamania jest niższy po drugiej stronie granicy, a kąt padania jest większy od kąta krytycznego, fala nie może przejść przez i jest całkowicie odbijana. Kąt krytyczny jest kątem padania, powyżej którego występuje całkowity współczynnik odbicia wewnętrznego. Jest to szczególnie zjawisko zjawiska optycznego, w którym zaangażowane są fale świetlne, ale występuje z wieloma rodzajami fal, na przykład falami elektromagnetycznymi lub falami dźwiękowymi. Gdy fala przekracza granicę pomiędzy różnymi materiałami o różnym współczynniku załamania światła, fala będzie częściowo załamana na powierzchni granicznej i częściowo odbijana. Jeśli jednak kąt padania jest większy niż kąt krytyczny - kąt padania, przy którym światło jest refrakcjonowane tak, że przemieszcza się wzdłuż granicy - wtedy fala nie przekroczy granicy, a zamiast tego będzie całkowicie odbijana wewnętrznie.
