Transpiracja
Transpiracja jest procesem przemieszczania się wody przez roślinę i jej odparowywaniu z części powietrznych, takich jak liście, ale także z łodyg i kwiatów. Powierzchnie liści są wykropkowane porami, które nazywają się stomatą, aw większości roślin są bardziej liczne na spodniej stronie liści. Stomaty są otoczone przez komórki strażnicze i ich komórki pomocnicze, które otwierają się i zamykają. Transpiracja odbywa się przez otwory stomatologiczne i można je uznać za konieczny "koszt" związany z otwarciem stomaty, aby umożliwić dyfuzję gazu dwutlenku węgla z powietrza w celu fotosyntezy. Transpiracja także chłodzi rośliny, zmienia osmotyczne ciśnienie komórek i umożliwia masowy przepływ mineralnych składników odżywczych i wody z korzeni do pędów. Masowy przepływ ciekłej wody z korzeni do liści napędzany jest częściowo przez działanie kapilarne, ale głównie napędzane różnicami potencjału wody. W wyższych roślinach i drzewach siła grawitacji może zostać pokonana jedynie przez spadek ciśnienia hydrostatycznego w górnych partiach roślin ze względu na dyfuzję wody ze stomaty do atmosfery.
