Podczas gdy niedożywienie jest częściej stosowane w krajach słabiej rozwiniętych, jest ono również obecne w krajach uprzemysłowionych. W krajach bogatych bardziej prawdopodobne jest, że niezdrowa dieta z nadmiarem energii, tłuszczów i rafinowanych węglowodanów. Coraz większa tendencja do otyłości jest obecnie poważnym problemem zdrowia publicznego w niższych poziomach społeczno-ekonomicznych oraz w krajach rozwijających się [5]. Światowa Organizacja Zdrowia zgłosiła głód i związane z tym niedożywienie jako największe pojedyncze zagrożenie dla zdrowia publicznego na świecie.
