Uraninite to radioaktywny minerał i rudy bogate w pierwiastki zawierające uran o składzie chemicznym, który w dużej mierze jest UO2, ale w wyniku utleniania minerał typowo zawiera zmienną U3O8. Dodatkowo, dzięki rozkładowi uranu, zawierają tlenki ołowiu i śladowe ilości helu. Może zawierać również pierwiastki toru i pierwiastków ziem rzadkich. Najczęściej jest znany jako pitchblende. Minerał był znany przynajmniej od 15 wieku z kopalń srebrnych w Rudach, na granicy niemiecko-czeskiej. Miejscowość typu to miasto Jáchymov, po czeskiej stronie gór, gdzie F.Erückmann opisał minerał w 1772 roku. Pitchblende z depozytu Johanngeorgenstadt w Niemczech został użyty przez M. Klaproth w 1789 roku w celu odkrycia uranu elementarnego. Wszystkie minerały uranitowe zawierają małą ilość radu jako radioaktywnego rozkładu uranu. Uraninite zawsze zawiera także małe ilości izotopów ołowiu 206Pb i 207Pb, produkty końcowe serii rozpadu izotopów uranu 238U i 235U. Małe ilości helu są również obecne w uraninie w wyniku zaniku alfa.
