Wanad jest pierwiastkiem chemicznym o symbolu V i atomowej numerze 23. Jest to twardy, srebrzysto-szary, ciągliwy i podatny na przetarcie metal przejściowy. Element ten występuje tylko w formie chemicznie połączonej w naturze, ale gdy izoluje się sztucznie, powstawanie warstwy tlenkowej stabilizuje nieco wolny metal przed dalszym utlenianiem. Andrés Manuel del Río odkrył w Meksyku związki wanadu w 1801 roku, analizując nowy minerał ołowiowy o nazwie "brązowy ołów" i przypuszczał, że jego właściwości wynikały z obecności nowego pierwiastka, który nazwał erythronium, większość soli odwróciła się od ich początkowego koloru do czerwieni.
