Aksamitnik, zwany również kaczką aksamitną lub bielącą, to duża kaczka morska, która rozciąga się na dalekiej północy Europy i Azji na zachód od dorzecza Yenisey. Mała, izolowana gmina populacji we wschodniej Turcji. Wschodnio-syberyjski i północnoamerykański białowłosy scoter jest czasami uznawany za skromny z aksamitem, a dwa jego podgatunki są znane jako M. f. stejnegeri i M. f. deglandi. W podrodzeniu Melanitta umieszcza się aksamitna i białoskrzydłowa scoter, wraz z scoterem do surfowania, różni się od podrodziny Oidemia, czarnych i wspólnych skuterów. Zimy na południu w strefie umiarkowanej, na południu Europy, na Wielkiej Brytanii, na Morzu Czarnym i na Morzu Kaspijskim. Małe numery docierają do Francji i północnej Hiszpanii. Tworzy duże stada na odpowiednich wodach przybrzeżnych. Są szczelnie opakowane, a ptaki mają tendencję do startu razem. Wyłożony gniazdo jest zbudowane na ziemi w pobliżu morza, jezior lub rzek, w lesie lub tundry, a zazwyczaj zawiera 7-9 jaj. Ta kaczka nurkuje się skorupiaków i mięczaków. Charakteryzuje się jego nieporęcznym kształtem i dużym rachunkiem. Jest to największy punktator na 51-58 cm.
