Lepkość
Lepkość płynu jest miarą jego odporności na stopniowe odkształcanie przez stres ścinania lub naprężenie rozciągające. Dla cieczy odpowiada nieformalnym pojęciom "grubości". Na przykład miód ma znacznie większą lepkość niż woda. Lepkość jest spowodowana tarciem między sąsiadującymi cząstkami w płynie poruszającym się z różnymi prędkościami. Gdy płyn jest wymuszany przez rurkę, płyn ogólnie przemieszcza się szybciej w pobliżu osi i bardzo powoli w pobliżu ścian; dlatego potrzebny jest pewien nacisk, aby pokonać tarcie między warstwami i utrzymywać płyn w ruchu. Dla tego samego wzoru prędkości wymagany stres jest proporcjonalny do lepkości płynu. Lepkość cieczy zależy od wielkości i kształtu jego cząstek oraz od atrakcji pomiędzy cząstkami. Płyn, który nie wykazuje odporności na naprężenia ścinające, jest znany jako idealny płyn lub niewidoczny płyn. Zero lepkości obserwuje się tylko w bardzo niskich temperaturach, w płynach nadających. W przeciwnym razie wszystkie płyny mają dodatnią lepkość. Jeśli lepkość jest bardzo wysoka, na przykład w skoku, płyn będzie wydawał się być stały w krótkim okresie.
