Neoteny
Neoteny, zwane również młodocianych, jest jednym z dwóch sposobów, w jaki może dojść do powstania paardorfizmu. Paaryorfizmem lub paedermorozą jest zachowanie przez dorosłych cech wcześniej obserwowanych tylko u młodych i jest przedmiotem badań w dziedzinie biologii rozwojowej. W neoteny fizjologiczny rozwój organizmu jest spowalniany lub opóźniany. Natomiast w progenesis rozwój płciowy zachodzi szybciej. Obydwa procesy skutkują paardorfizmem, rodzajem heterochrony. Ostatecznie ten proces powoduje zatrzymanie, u dorosłych gatunku, młodocianych właściwości fizycznych w dojrzałości i pedogenezie, reprodukcji w stanie neotenizowanym. Neoteny to jeden z trzech wymiarów heterochrony lub zmiana czasu zdarzeń rozwojowych: przyspieszenie a neoteny, hipermorfoza vs. progenesis i predyspozycja do zmian postdisplacement. Słowo neoteny jest zapożyczone z niemieckiego neoteniego, drugiego zbudowanego z greckiego νέος i τείνειν. Przymiotnik wyrazu jest "neoteniczny" lub "neotenowy".
