Efekt Zeeman
Efekt Zeeman, noszący nazwę holenderskiego fizyka Pieter Zeeman, jest efektem podziału linii widmowej na kilka elementów w obecności statycznego pola magnetycznego. Jest to analogiczne do efektu Stark, dzielenie linii widmowej na kilka elementów w obecności pola elektrycznego. Również podobny do efektu Stark, przejścia pomiędzy różnymi elementami mają na ogół różne natężenia, a niektóre są całkowicie zabronione, zgodnie z regułami selekcji. Ponieważ odległość między podestami Zeeman jest funkcją pola magnetycznego, efekt ten może być użyty do mierzenia pola magnetycznego, np. Słońce i inne gwiazdy lub w plazmach laboratoryjnych. Efekt Zeeman jest bardzo ważny w zastosowaniach, takich jak spektroskopia magnetycznego rezonansu jądrowego, spektroskopia rezonansu elektronowej spinowej, obrazowanie rezonansu magnetycznego i spektroskopia Mössbauera. Może być również wykorzystany do poprawienia dokładności spektroskopii absorpcji atomowej. Teoria o magnetycznym znaczeniu ptaków zakłada, że białko w siatkówce zmienia się ze względu na efekt Zeeman. Gdy linie widmowe są liniami absorpcyjnymi, efekt ten nazywa się efektem odwrotnego Zeeman.
