Symbiodinium
Rodzaj Symbiodinium obejmuje największą i najbardziej rozpowszechnioną grupę endosymbiotycznych dinoflagellatów znanych. Te jednokomórkowe protistki glonów zwykle zamieszkują endodermę tropikalnych cnidariuszy, takich jak koralowce, morskie anemony i jellyfish, gdzie produkty ich fotosyntezy są wymieniane w organizmie cząsteczek nieorganicznych. Są one również schronione przez różne gatunki gąbki, flatworms, mięczaki, takie jak olbrzymie małże, foraminifera i niektóre ciliates. Zazwyczaj te dinoflagellaty wchodzą do komórki gospodarza przez fagocytozę, utrzymują się jako wewnątrzkomórkowe symbole, reprodukują i rozpraszają środowisko. Wyjątkiem jest większość mięczaków, gdzie Symbiodinium jest międzykomórkowe. Cnidarianie związani z Symbiodinem występują głównie w ciepłych, oligotroficznych środowiskach morskich, gdzie często dominują składniki wspólnot bentosowych. Te dinoflagelaty stanowią więc jedne z najbardziej obficie występujących eukariotycznych mikroorganizmów występujących w ekosystemach raf koralowych. Symbiodinium potocznie nazywa się "zooxanthellae", a zwierzęta symbiotyczne z algami w tym rodzaju rodzaju są określane jako "zooxanthellate".
