Stopień Celsjusza wyznacza jednostkę temperatury, nazwaną imieniem szwedzkiego astronoma Andersa Celsjusza, który jako pierwszy zaproponował ją w 1742 r. Skala temperatury Celsjusza ma dwa ważne punkty, w których punkt zamarzania wody odpowiada zeru. a temperatura wrzenia odpowiada wartości 100, obserwowanej przy standardowym ciśnieniu atmosferycznym, zwanej również ciśnieniem normalnym. Ponieważ pomiędzy tymi dwoma punktami odniesienia istnieje sto podziałek, pierwotnym terminem dla tego systemu była liczba stopni Celsjusza lub setna. W 1948 r. Oficjalna nazwa systemu została zmodyfikowana dla Celsjusza podczas 9. Konferencji Miar, zarówno w uznaniu Celsjusza, jak i w celu wyeliminowania zamieszania spowodowanego konfliktem używania prefiksów SI centi. Dlatego nie jest wygodnie mówić "stopnie Celsjusza", ale raczej "stopień Celsjusza".
