Atom to najmniejszy kamień budowlany, który przenosi chemiczne i fizyczne właściwości całego materiału w znanej fazie. Atom jest rodzajem gwiazd atomowych, co oznacza, że nie można go podzielić na grecki. Pierwszą osobą, która wymyśliła słowo Atomus, był Demokryt mieszkający w latach 40. pne. Jest to bardzo mała cząstka, której nie można zobaczyć wizualnie, a jest to po prostu mikroskop skanujący tunel itd. . W atomie znajduje się ujemnie naładowana chmura elektronowa otaczająca jądro. Jeśli liczba elektronów i protonów nie jest równa, cząstkę tę nazywa się jonem. Jony są bardzo niestabilne i wchodzą w interakcję z innymi jonami i atomami w środowisku, aby pozbyć się ich wysokiej energii. Atom jest klasyfikowany zgodnie z liczbą protonów i neutronów jakie posiada: liczba protonów w atomie określa pierwiastek chemiczny, a liczba neutronów również określa izotop tego pierwiastka. Każdy pierwiastek ma co najmniej jeden izotop dający rozpad radioaktywny.
