Urządzenia optyczne opracowane w celu uzyskania bardzo intensywnego, spójnego i monochromatycznego światła nazywane są mistrzami i laserami. Posługując się pierwszymi literami słów "Wzmacnianie mikrofalami przez stymulowaną emisję promieniowania", opracowanymi przez CH Townesa (1953) po raz pierwszy przez CH Townesa (1953), urządzenia, które w skrócie określa się jako wzorce, zostały później opracowane przez TH Maimana (1960) (Jasne wzmocnienie przez stymulowaną emisję promieniowania) Lasery są źródłami optycznymi, które tworzą fotony w spójnej wiązce, po raz pierwszy wprowadzonej przez Alberta Einsteina w 1917 roku. W 1960 Theodore Maiman wykonał optyczny laser frekans i udowodnił istnienie rubinowego lasera. Potem nastąpiła znaczna poprawa w użyciu lasera.

Townes (1953) tarafından mikrodalga bölgesinde geliştirilen ve Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (Uyarılmış Işıma ile Mikrodalga Yükseltici) kelimelerinin ilk harflerinden yararlanarak kısaca maser adı verilen düzenekler daha sonra T. H. Maiman (1960) tarafından Laser (Lazer) (İngilizce LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) olarak adlandırılmıştır. Lazerler, fotonları uyumlu bir hüzme şeklinde oluşturan optik kaynaklardır. İlk olarak 1917 yılında Albert Einstein tarafından stimüle ışımanın varlığı öne sürüldü. 1960 yılında Theodore Maiman optik frekansta lazer hereketini gerçekleştirdi ve yakut lazerinin varlığını kanıtladı. Bu olaydan sonra lazer kullanımında oldukça önemli gelişmeler oldu.
