Orangutan jest cinstirem należącym do rodziny Hominidae z grupy Primates i zawiera dwa gatunki: ▪ Pongo abeli; Indonezyjskie wyspy Sumatry są mniejsze, mają mniejszy charakter i są znacznie mniejsze. ▪ Pongo pygmaeus; Borneo to gatunek specyficzny dla wyspy, bardziej zbudowany i wiele innych gatunków w przyrodzie. Rodzaj Pongo dzieli się z podrodziną Ponginae, rodzina Hominidae wraz z Homininae, z dwiema wymarłą rodziną, Gigantopithecus i Sivapithecus. Nawet dzisiaj, choć unikalne na Borneo i Sumatrze, znaleziono skamieliny w Cava, Wietnamie i Chinach. Pochodzenie nazwy "Orangutan" jest wyrażeniem "orang hutan", które jest unikalne dla języków malezyjskich i indonezyjskich i oznacza "człowiek lasu". Orangutan jest oficjalnym symbolem malajskiego państwa Sabah. Orangutany wyróżniające się długimi ramionami i czerwonobrązowymi włosami są największymi, którzy przeżyli duże humanoidalne małpy.
