O termo "otólito" refere-se, por um lado, ao fato de que essas estruturas estão localizadas no ouvido interno durante o plexo vertebral, por outro lado, servem a sensação de audição em muitos peixes. Em sentido estrito, os biominais que consistem em carbonato de cálcio são designados como otokonia de mamíferos. Os estatitômetros podem ser livremente móveis em células múltiplas em estatocistos ou podem ser anexados aos cabelos das células sensoriais. As forças de pressão, tração e cisalhamento são percebidas. Os reflexos desencadeados pelos órgãos sensoriais da gravidade levam ao ser vivo capaz de manter sua posição normal no espaço.

Durch ihre träge Masse und ihre Gewichtskraft ermöglichen sie dem Organismus, Beschleunigungen und die Richtung der Schwerkraft wahrzunehmen. Die Bezeichnung Otolith bezieht sich einerseits darauf, dass sich diese Gebilde bei Wirbeltieren im Innenohr befinden, andererseits dienen sie bei vielen Fischen dem Hörsinn. Als Otokonien im engeren Sinne bezeichnet man die aus Kalziumkarbonat bestehenden Biominerale bei Säugetieren. Statolithen können bei Mehrzellern in Statozysten frei beweglich liegen, oder sie können an den Härchen von Sinneszellen befestigt sein. Dabei werden Druck-, Zug- und Scherkräfte wahrgenommen. Die Reflexe, die durch die Schwere-Sinnesorgane ausgelöst werden, führen dazu, dass das Lebewesen seine Normallage im Raum aufrechterhalten kann.
