O abolicionismo é um movimento para acabar com a escravidão, seja formal ou informal. Na Europa Ocidental e na América, o abolicionismo foi um movimento histórico para acabar com o tráfico de escravos africano e indiano e libertar os escravos. O rei espanhol em Espanha seguindo o exemplo do Monarca sueco aprovou uma lei que teria abolido a escravidão colonial em 1542, embora esta lei não tenha sido aprovada nos maiores estados coloniais, e assim não foi cumprida. Mais tarde, no século 17, os quacres ingleses e os grupos religiosos evangélicos condenaram a escravidão como não-cristã; No século 18, a abolição fazia parte da mensagem do Primeiro Grande Despertar nas Treze Colônias; e no mesmo período, os pensadores racionalistas do Iluminismo criticaram-no por violar os direitos do homem. James Edward Oglethorpe foi o primeiro a articular o caso das Iluminações contra a escravidão, proibindo-o na Província da Geórgia por motivos humanísticos, argumentando contra ele no Parlamento e, eventualmente, incentivando seus amigos Granville Sharp e Hannah More a perseguirem vigorosamente a causa. Logo após sua morte em 1785, eles se juntaram com William Wilberforce e outros na formação da Seção Clapham.
