Em química, o valor do ácido é a massa de hidróxido de potássio em miligramas que é necessário para neutralizar um grama de substância química. O número de ácido é uma medida da quantidade de grupos de ácido carboxílico em um composto químico, como um ácido gordo ou em uma mistura de compostos. Num procedimento típico, uma quantidade conhecida de amostra dissolvida em solvente orgânico, é titulada com uma solução de hidróxido de potássio com concentração conhecida e com fenolftaleína como indicador de cor. O número de ácido é usado para quantificar a quantidade de ácido presente, por exemplo, em uma amostra de biodiesel. É a quantidade de base, expressada em miligramas de hidróxido de potássio, que é necessária para neutralizar os constituintes ácidos em 1 g de amostra. Veq é o volume de titulante consumido pela amostra de petróleo bruto e 1 ml de solução de pico no ponto equivalente, o peso é o volume de titulante consumido por 1 ml de solução de picado no ponto equivalente e 56,1 é o peso molecular do KOH. A WOIL é a massa da amostra em gramas.
