O hormônio adrenocorticotrópico, também conhecido como corticotropina, é um hormônio do polipéptido trópico produzido e secretado pela glândula pituitária anterior. É um componente importante do eixo hipotálamo-hipófise-adrenal e muitas vezes é produzido em resposta ao estresse biológico. Seus principais efeitos são o aumento da produção e liberação de corticosteróides. A insuficiência adrenal primária, também chamada de doença de Addison, ocorre quando a produção de cortisol na glândula adrenal é cronicamente deficiente, resultando em níveis de ACTH cronicamente elevados; Quando um tumor pituitário é a causa da ACTH elevada, isso é conhecido como Doença de Cushing e a constelação de sinais e sintomas do excesso de cortisol é conhecida como síndrome de Cushing. A deficiência de ACTH é uma causa de insuficiência adrenal secundária. A ACTH também está relacionada ao ritmo circadiano em muitos organismos.
