Actinobiologia
Actinobiologia é o estudo dos efeitos da radiação sobre os organismos vivos. Porque há uma abundância de radiação no espaço que poderia ser usada como fonte de energia, este campo é aplicável ao futuro da viagem espacial. Muller, que usou os raios X pela primeira vez para aumentar a taxa de mutação em Drosophila, abriu um campo inteiramente novo na indução de mutações. Então, Muller é considerado o "Pai da Actinobiologia". Em 2002, cientistas russos encontraram fungos ricos em melanina crescendo perto do solo zero em Chernobyl. Logo descobriu-se que esses fungos estavam usando a radiação como uma fonte de energia da mesma forma que as plantas usam o sol para fotossíntese. A bactéria radiotrófica também foi descoberta profundamente no subsolo, alimentando-se com emissões de urânio.
