Afflatus é um termo latino derivado de Cicero (em De Natura Deorum (a natureza dos deuses)) que foi traduzido como "inspiração". O uso de Cícero era uma literalização da "inspiração", que já se tornou figurativa. Como "inspiração" significava simplesmente a reunião de uma nova idéia, Cícero reiterou a idéia de uma onda de respiração inesperada, uma força poderosa que tornaria o poeta indefesa e inconsciente de sua origem. Literalmente, o "afflatus" latino significa "soprar sobre / para". Foi originalmente escrito "adflatus", composto de "ad" (para) e "flato" (sopro / respiração), a forma substancial de "flâre" (para soprar). Pode ser interpretado como "ser soprado" por um vento divino, diferente da sua "inspiração" em inglês, que vem de "inspiração", que significa "respirar / soprar".
