Retroperistalsis
Retroperistalsis é o inverso das contrações involuntárias do músculo liso do peristaltismo. Geralmente ocorre como um precursor de vômitos. A irritação local do estômago, como bactérias ou intoxicação alimentar, ativa o centro emético do cérebro, que por sua vez sinaliza um reflexo de vômito iminente. O alimento então se move na direção oposta, muitas vezes do duodeno para o estômago. O retroperistalsis ocorre patologicamente durante o vômito e fisiologicamente na primeira parte do duodeno, onde protege da alta acidez dos alimentos, e também no íleo terminal, onde uma quantidade de água e eletrólito são absorvidos para ajudar a defecação.
