Na abadia cristã românica, bizantina e gótica, arquitetura catedral e igreja, o termo é aplicado a uma terminação semi-circular ou poligonal do edifício principal no extremo litúrgico do leste (onde o altar é), independentemente da forma do telhado, que pode ser plana, inclinada, abobadada ou hemisférica.
