Arqueopteryx
Archaeopteryx, às vezes referido pelo seu nome alemão Urvogel, é um gênero de early bird que é transicional entre dinossauros emplumados e pássaros modernos. O nome deriva do grego antigo ἀρχαῖος que significa "antigo", e πτέρυξ, que significa "pena" ou "asa". Desde o final do século XIX, foi geralmente aceito por paleontólogos e celebrado em trabalhos de referência leigos, sendo o pássaro conhecido mais antigo. No entanto, já foram identificados potenciais avialários potenciais, incluindo Anchiornis, Xiaotingia e Aurornis. Archaeopteryx viveu no período jurássico tardio, há cerca de 150 milhões de anos, no que é agora o sul da Alemanha, durante uma época em que a Europa era um arquipélago de ilhas em um mar tropical quente e superficial, muito mais perto do equador do que agora.
