O axolotl (/ æksəlɒtəl /; etymol. Nāhuatl āxōlōtl (singular) ou āxōlōmeh (plural) "water monster"), também conhecido como salamandra mexicana (Ambystoma mexicanum) ou um peixe mexicano a pé, é uma salamandra neotênica, intimamente relacionada à salamandra de tigre. Embora o axolotl seja conhecido coloquialmente como um "peixe caminhante", não é um peixe, mas um anfíbio. A espécie é originária de numerosos lagos, como o lago Xochimilco subjacente à Cidade do México. Axolotls são incomuns entre os anfíbios na medida em que atingem a idade adulta sem sofrer metamorfose. Em vez de desenvolver pulmões e levar para a terra, os adultos permanecem aquáticos e engoliu.
