Um azeótropo é uma mistura de dois ou mais líquidos cujas proporções não podem ser alteradas por simples destilação. Isso acontece porque, quando um azeótropo é fervido, o vapor tem as mesmas proporções de constituintes que a mistura não lavada. Como a sua composição é inalterada por destilação, os azeótropos também são chamados de misturas de ebulição constantes. A palavra azeótropo é derivada das palavras gregas ζένιν e τρόπος combinadas com o prefixo α- para dar o significado geral, "nenhuma alteração na fervura". As misturas azeotrópicas de pares de compostos foram documentadas, e também são conhecidos muitos azeótropos de três ou mais compostos. São misturas binárias com a mesma composição em fase líquida e em vapor e fermentam a temperatura constante. Nesse caso, não é possível separar os componentes por destilação fracionada. An azeotrope is a mixture of two or more liquids whose proportions cannot be altered by simple distillation. This happens because, when an azeotrope is boiled, the vapor has the same proportions of constituents as the unboiled mixture. Because their composition is unchanged by distillation, azeotropes are also called constant boiling mixtures. The word azeotrope is derived from the Greek words ζέειν and τρόπος combined with the prefix α- to give the overall meaning, "no change on boiling". Azeotropic mixtures of pairs of compounds have been documented, and many azeotropes of three or more compounds are also known. They are binary mixtures having the same composition in liquid and vapour phase and boil at a constant temperature. In such a case it is not possible to separate the components by fractional distillation. There are two types of azeotropes: minimum boiling azeotrope and maximum boiling azeotrope. A solution that shows greater positive deviation from Raoult's law forms a minimum boiling azeotrope at a specific composition.
