Balcãs
A península balcânica, popularmente conhecida como os Balcãs, é uma região geográfica do Sudeste da Europa. A região toma o nome das Montanhas dos Balcãs que se estendem do leste da Bulgária até o leste da Sérvia. A região é predominantemente habitada por búlgaros, croatas, bósnios, gorani, macedônios, montenegrinos, sérvios, eslovenos, romenos, aromanianos, gregos, albaneses, turcos e outros grupos étnicos que apresentam minorias em certos países, como Romani e Ashkali. A maior religião dos Balcãs é o cristianismo ortodoxo, seguido do cristianismo católico e do islamismo. A área total dos Balcãs é de 257.400 milhas quadradas e a população é 59.297.000. Os Balcãs encontram o Mar Adriático no noroeste, o Mar Jónico no sudoeste, o Mediterrâneo e o Mar Egeu ao sul e sudeste, e ao Mar Negro ao leste e nordeste. O ponto mais alto dos Balcãs é o monte Musala 2,925 metros na Serra de Rila na Bulgária. Os Balcãs foram habitados desde o Paleolítico e são a rota pela qual a agricultura do Oriente Médio se espalhou para a Europa durante o Neolítico.
