Bathybius haeckelii
Bathybius haeckelii era uma substância que o biólogo britânico Thomas Henry Huxley descobriu e inicialmente acreditava ser uma forma de matéria primordial, uma fonte de toda vida orgânica. Mais tarde ele admitiu seu erro quando provou ser apenas o produto de um processo químico. Em 1868, Huxley estudou uma antiga amostra de lama do fundo do Oceano Atlântico, tomada em 1857. Quando ele a examinou pela primeira vez, ele encontrou apenas células de protozoários e colocou a amostra em uma jarra de álcool para preservá-la. Agora ele notou que a amostra continha uma lodo albuminosa que parecia cruzada com veias. Huxley pensou que havia descoberto uma nova substância orgânica e a chamou de Bathybius haeckelii, em homenagem ao filósofo alemão Ernst Haeckel. Haeckel tinha teorizado sobre Urschleim, um protoplasma de onde toda a vida havia se originado. Huxley pensou que Bathybius poderia ser aquele protoplasma, um elo perdido entre matéria inorgânica e vida orgânica. Huxley publicou uma descrição de Bathybius e também escreveu a Haeckel para contar sobre isso. Haeckel ficou impressionado e lisonjeado e obteve uma amostra para si mesmo.
