É a identificação da espécie que abrange duas variedades distintas da cultura tradicional no Leste Asiático: ▪) P. frutescens var. crispa a erva aromática e frondosa chamada por seu nome japonês shiso, que por sua vez é uma palavra de empréstimo de chinês: 紫蘇; pinyin: zi-su; Wade-Giles: tsu-su. A planta ocorre em formas vermelhas (com folhas roxas) ou com folhas verdes. Ele também tem um nome traduzido menos elegante "beefsteak plant", mas a partir da década de 1980, com o aumento da popularidade da cozinha japonesa, tornou-se cada vez mais chique para a mídia de massa usar como shiso ▪) P. frutescens var. frutescens, a colheita de oleaginosas, fonte de óleo de perilla. Esta variedade é usada como ingrediente na culinária coreana, tanto "gergelim selvagem" (lit. tr. De deulggae) e "folhas de sesamo", que são verdes.
