Biodegradação
Degradação causada pelo processo enzimático resultante da ação das células. Nota: Modificado para excluir processos enzimáticos abióticos. A biodegradação é a dissolução química de materiais por bactérias ou outros meios biológicos. Apesar de muitas vezes confundido, o biodegradável é distinto em termos de compostagem. Embora biodegradável simplesmente significa ser consumido por microorganismos e retornar aos compostos encontrados na natureza, "compostable" faz a demanda específica de que o objeto se desintegra em uma pilha de compostagem. O termo é freqüentemente usado em relação à ecologia, gerenciamento de resíduos, biomedicina e ambiente natural e agora é comumente associado a produtos ecológicos que são capazes de se decompõem de volta aos elementos naturais. O material orgânico pode ser degradado aerobicamente com oxigênio, ou anaerobicamente, sem oxigênio. O biossurfactante, um surfactante extracelular secretado por microorganismos, melhora o processo de biodegradação.
