Fração de ramificação
Na física de partículas e na física nuclear, a fração de ramificação para uma deterioração é a fração de partículas que se decompõem por um modo de decaimento individual em relação ao número total de partículas que se deterioram. É igual à razão entre a constante de decaimento parcial e a constante de decaimento global. Às vezes, uma semi-vida parcial é dada, mas esse termo é enganador; devido a modos concorrentes, não é verdade que a metade das partículas se desintegra através de um determinado modo de decaimento após a sua semi-vida parcial. A semi-vida parcial é meramente uma maneira alternativa de especificar a constante de decaimento parcial λ, sendo os dois relacionados através: Por exemplo, para decomposições espontâneas de 132Cs, 98,1% são ε ou β + decadências e 1,9% são β-decays. As constantes de decaimento parcial podem ser calculadas a partir da fração de ramificação e da meia-vida de 132Cs, são: 0,10 d-1 e 0020 d-1. As semi-vidas parciais são 6,60 d e 341 d. Aqui, o problema com o termo semi-vida parcial é evidente: depois de dias, quase todos os núcleos terão decaído, não apenas a metade como se pensa inicialmente.
