Parada cardíaca
A parada cardíaca, também conhecida como prisão cardiopulmonar ou paragem circulatória, é a cessação da circulação funcional do sangue devido à falha no coração para se contrair efetivamente. O pessoal médico pode se referir a uma parada cardíaca inesperada como uma parada cardíaca súbita. Uma parada cardíaca é diferente de um ataque cardíaco, onde o fluxo sanguíneo para o músculo do coração está prejudicado. É diferente da insuficiência cardíaca congestiva, onde a circulação é deficiente, mas o coração ainda está bombeando sangue suficiente para sustentar a vida. A circulação sangüínea detida impede o fornecimento de oxigênio e glicose ao corpo. A falta de oxigênio e glicose no cérebro causa perda de consciência, o que resulta em respiração anormal ou ausente. A lesão cerebral provavelmente ocorrerá se a parada cardíaca não for tratada por mais de cinco minutos. Para a melhor chance de sobrevivência e recuperação neurológica, é imperativo um tratamento imediato e decisivo. A parada cardíaca é uma emergência médica que, em determinadas situações, é potencialmente reversível se for tratada precocemente. Uma parada cardíaca inesperada pode levar à morte em poucos minutos: isso é chamado de morte cardíaca súbita.
