O limite Chandrasekhar / tʃʌndrəʃeɪkɑr / é a massa máxima de uma estrela anã branca estável. O limite foi publicado pela primeira vez por Wilhelm Anderson e EC Stoner, e recebeu o nome de Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, o astrofísico indiano-americano que melhorou a precisão do cálculo em 1930, com a idade de 19 anos. Este limite foi inicialmente ignorado pela comunidade de cientistas porque tal limite exigiria logicamente a existência de buracos negros, que eram considerados impossibilidade científica na época. As anãs brancas, ao contrário das estrelas da sequência principal, resistem ao colapso gravitacional principalmente através da pressão de degeneração de elétrons, em vez de pressão térmica. O limite de Chandrasekhar é a massa acima da qual a pressão de degeneração de elétrons no núcleo da estrela é insuficiente para equilibrar a auto-atração gravitacional da estrela. Conseqüentemente, anãs brancas com massas maiores do que o limite sofrem mais colapso gravitacional, evoluindo para um tipo diferente de remanescente estelar, como uma estrela de nêutrons ou buraco negro. Aqueles com massas sob o limite permanecem estáveis como anãs brancas. O valor atualmente aceito do limite é de cerca de 1,39.
