Na programação de computadores, uma string é tradicionalmente uma seqüência de caracteres, seja como uma constante literal ou como algum tipo de variável. O último pode permitir que seus elementos sejam mutados e o comprimento alterado, ou pode ser corrigido. Uma seqüência de caracteres geralmente é entendida como um tipo de dados e muitas vezes é implementada como uma matriz de bytes que armazena uma seqüência de elementos, tipicamente caracteres, usando alguma codificação de caracteres. Uma string também pode denotar matrizes mais gerais ou outros tipos e estruturas de dados de sequência. Dependendo da linguagem de programação e do tipo de dados preciso usado, uma variável declarada como uma string pode fazer com que o armazenamento na memória seja alocada de forma estática para um comprimento máximo predeterminado ou empregar alocação dinâmica para permitir a manutenção de número variável de elementos. Quando uma seqüência de caracteres aparece literalmente em código-fonte, ela é conhecida como uma string literal e tem uma representação que a denomina como tal. Em linguagens formais, que são usadas em lógica matemática e ciência computacional teórica, uma seqüência de caracteres é uma seqüência finita de símbolos que são escolhidos de um conjunto chamado alfabeto.
