O cartismo era um movimento da classe trabalhadora para a reforma política na Grã-Bretanha que existia de 1838 a 1850 e que tomou o nome da Carta do Povo de 1838. Era um movimento nacional de protesto, com fortalezas particulares de apoio no norte da Inglaterra, o leste Midlands, The Potteries, Black Country e Gales do Sul. O apoio ao movimento foi o mais alto em 1839, 1842 e 1848, quando as petições assinadas por milhões de pessoas trabalhadoras foram apresentadas à Câmara dos Comuns. A Carta do Povo pediu seis reformas para tornar o sistema político mais democrático: ▪ Um voto para cada homem de vinte e um anos de idade, de mente sadia e não sofrendo punição por um crime. ▪ A cédula secreta - Para proteger o eleitor no exercício de seu voto.
