Polarização circular
Na eletrodinâmica, a polarização circular de uma onda eletromagnética é uma polarização na qual o campo elétrico da onda de passagem não muda de força, mas apenas muda a direção de maneira rotativa. Na eletrodinâmica, a força e direção de um campo elétrico é definida pelo que é chamado de vetor de campo elétrico. No caso de uma onda circularmente polarizada, como se vê na animação que acompanha, a ponta do vetor de campo elétrico, em um determinado ponto do espaço, descreve um círculo à medida que o tempo avança. Se a onda estiver congelada no tempo, o vetor de campo elétrico da onda descreve uma hélice ao longo da direção da propagação. A polarização circular é um caso limitante da condição mais geral da polarização elíptica. O outro caso especial é a polarização linear mais fácil de entender. O fenômeno da polarização surge como uma conseqüência do fato de que a luz se comporta como uma onda transversal bidimensional.
