Cleruchy
Um cleruchy na Grécia clássica, era um tipo especial de colônia estabelecida por Atenas. O termo vem da palavra grega κληροῦχος, klērouchos, literalmente "titular do lote". Normalmente, as colônias gregas eram politicamente independentes; eles teriam um relacionamento especial com a cidade-mãe da metrópole, mas de outra forma seriam entidades independentes. Cleruch foram significativamente diferentes. Os colonos ou cleruchs manteriam sua cidadania ateniense e a comunidade continuaria sendo uma dependência política de Atenas. Os cleruchis foram estabelecidos como um meio de exportar populações em excesso e geralmente empobrecidas para localidades convenientemente distantes, como o Chersonese do Thracian no lado distante do Mar Egeu. Sob o acordo cleruchy, o cidadão participante recebeu uma parcela de terras agrícolas, daí um meio para ganhar seu sustento. Isso elevou o cidadão à classe de propriedade de zeugitai. O cleruch seria obrigado a defender sua colônia servindo-a como um hoplite.
