Motor composto
Um mecanismo composto é um mecanismo que possui mais de um estágio para recuperar energia do mesmo fluido de trabalho, com o escape da primeira etapa passando pelo segundo estágio e, em alguns casos, em outro estágio subseqüente ou mesmo. Originalmente inventado como um meio de tornar as máquinas a vapor mais eficientes, a combinação de motores por meio de vários estágios também foi usada em motores de combustão interna e continua a ter nichos de mercado lá. Os estágios de um mecanismo composto podem ser de tecnologias diferentes ou similares, por exemplo: ▪ Em um motor de turbo-composto, os gases de escape dos cilindros passam por uma turbina, sendo os dois estágios diferentes. ▪ Em uma locomotiva a vapor composta, o vapor passa do cilindro ou cilindros de alta pressão para o cilindro ou cilindros de baixa pressão, sendo os dois estágios semelhantes. ▪ Em uma máquina de vapor de expansão tripla, o vapor passa por três cilindros sucessivos de tamanho crescente e pressão decrescente. Tais motores eram os motores marinhos mais comuns na idade dourada do vapor. Estes exemplos e turbinas compostas são os principais, mas não os únicos usos de composição em motores, veja abaixo.
