Contactor
Um contator é um interruptor eletricamente controlado usado para mudar um circuito de energia, semelhante a um relé exceto com classificações de corrente mais altas. Um contator é controlado por um circuito que tem um nível de potência muito menor que o circuito comutado. Os contatores vêm em várias formas com diferentes capacidades e recursos. Ao contrário de um disjuntor, um contator não se destina a interromper uma corrente de curto-circuito. Os contatores variam daqueles com uma corrente de ruptura de vários amperes a milhares de amperes e 24 V DC a muitos kilovolts. O tamanho físico dos contatores varia de um dispositivo pequeno o suficiente para pegar com uma mão, para dispositivos grandes aproximadamente um metro de lado. Os contatores são usados para controlar motores elétricos, iluminação, aquecimento, bancos de capacitores, evaporadores térmicos e outras cargas elétricas.
