O Livro do Deuteronômio é o quinto livro da Bíblia hebraica e da Torah / Pentateuco judaica. O título hebraico é tirado da frase de abertura Eleh ha-devarim: "Estas são as palavras ..."; O título inglês é de uma tradução erronea da frase hebraica mishneh ha-torah ha-zoth, "uma cópia desta lei", em Deuteronômio 17:18, quanto a deuteronomion touto - "esta segunda lei". O livro consiste em três sermões ou discursos entregues aos israelitas por Moisés nas planícies de Moab, pouco antes de entrarem na Terra Prometida. O primeiro sermão recapitula os quarenta anos de andorinhas do deserto que levaram a esse momento e termina com uma exortação para observar a lei, mais tarde referida como a Lei de Moisés; o segundo lembra aos israelitas a necessidade de fidelidade exclusiva a um deus e a observância das leis que ele lhes deu, das quais depende a sua possessão da terra; e o terceiro oferece o conforto que, mesmo que Israel se revelasse infiel e, assim, perca a terra, com o arrependimento, tudo pode ser restaurado.

The Book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Hebrew Bible, and of the Jewish Torah/Pentateuch. The Hebrew title is taken from the opening phrase Eleh ha-devarim, "These are the words..."; the English title is from a Greek mis-translation of the Hebrew phrase mishneh ha-torah ha-zoth, "a copy of this law", in Deuteronomy 17:18, as to deuteronomion touto – "this second law". The book consists of three sermons or speeches delivered to the Israelites by Moses on the plains of Moab, shortly before they enter the Promised Land. The first sermon recapitulates the forty years of wilderness wanderings which have led to this moment, and ends with an exhortation to observe the law, later referred to as the Law of Moses; the second reminds the Israelites of the need for exclusive allegiance to one God and observance of the laws he has given them, on which their possession of the land depends; and the third offers the comfort that even should Israel prove unfaithful and so lose the land, with repentance all can be restored.
