Diocleciano
Diocleciano foi imperador romano de 284 a 305. Nascido em uma família de baixa condição na província romana de Dalmácia, Diocleciano subiu pelas fileiras dos militares para se tornar comandante de cavalaria para o Imperador Carus. Após a morte de Carus e seu filho Numerian em campanha na Pérsia, Diocleciano foi proclamado imperador. O título também foi reivindicado pelo outro filho sobrevivente de Carus, Carinus, mas Diocletian o derrotou na Batalha do Margus. O reinado de Diocleciano estabilizou o império e marca o fim da crise do terceiro século. Ele nomeou o colega Maximiano como augusto, co-imperador, em 286. Diocleciano delegou ainda mais em 1 de março de 293, nomeando Galerius e Constantius como caesars, co-imperadores júnior. Sob esta "tetrarquia", ou "regra de quatro", cada imperador governaria uma quarta divisão do império. Diocleciano assegurou as fronteiras do império e purgou-o de todas as ameaças ao seu poder. Ele derrotou os sármatas e carpi durante várias campanhas entre 285 e 299, os alamanos em 288 e usurpadores no Egito entre 297 e 298. Galerius, auxiliado por Diocleciano, fez campanha com sucesso contra Sassanid Persia, o inimigo tradicional do império.
