Dubstep / dʌbstɛp / é um gênero de música de dança eletrônica que se originou no sul de Londres, Inglaterra. Emergiu no final da década de 1990 como um desenvolvimento dentro de uma linhagem de estilos relacionados, como garagem em 2 etapas, batida quebrada, tambor e baixo, selva, dub e reggae. No Reino Unido, as origens do gênero podem ser rastreadas até o crescimento da cena partidária do sistema de som jamaicano no início dos anos 80. A música geralmente apresenta padrões de tambor e percussão sincopados com linhas de baixo que contêm frequências sub-graves proeminentes. Os primeiros lançamentos de dubstep datam de 1998, e geralmente foram apresentados como lados B de lançamentos únicos de garagem em 2 etapas. Essas faixas eram remixes mais sombrios e mais experimentais com menor ênfase nos vocais e tentaram incorporar elementos de breakbeat e drum and bass em 2 etapas. Em 2001, esta e outras músicas de garagem escura começaram a ser exibidas e promovidas no clube noturno de plástico de Londres Plastic, na noite "Forward", que passou a ser consideravelmente influente para o desenvolvimento do dubstep.
