O ecumenismo é uma iniciativa interdenominacional destinada a uma maior unidade ou cooperação cristã. O termo é usado predominantemente por e com referência às denominações cristãs e igrejas cristãs separadas pela doutrina, história e prática. Dentro desse contexto particular, o ecumenismo é a idéia de uma unidade cristã no sentido literal: que deve haver uma única Igreja. O ecumenismo é separado e distinto do cristianismo não confessional. A palavra é derivada do grego οἰκουμένη, que significa "todo o mundo habitado", e foi historicamente usado com referência específica ao Império Romano. A visão ecumênica compreende tanto a busca da unidade visível da Igreja como a "Terra inteira habitada" como a preocupação de todos os cristãos.
