Edward VIII foi o Rei do Reino Unido e os Domínios do Império Britânico e Imperador da Índia, de 20 de janeiro de 1936 até sua abdicação em 11 de dezembro de 1936. Edward era o filho mais velho do rei George V e Queen Mary. Ele foi criado Prince of Wales em seu décimo sexto aniversário, nove semanas depois que seu pai sucedeu seu próprio pai, Edward VII, como rei. Como jovem, serviu nas Forças Armadas Britânicas durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial e realizou vários passeios no exterior em nome de seu pai.
