O termo Ekistics aplica-se à ciência dos assentamentos humanos. Inclui planejamento regional, urbano, comunitário e design de habitação. Envolve o estudo de todos os tipos de assentamentos humanos, com vista à geografia e à ecologia - o ambiente físico - e psicologia humana e antropologia, e cultural, política e ocasionalmente estética. Como um modo científico de estudo atualmente é encontrado com base em estatística e descrição, organizada em cinco elementos ekistic: natureza, anthropos, sociedade, conchas e redes. Geralmente é um campo mais científico do que o planejamento urbano e tem uma sobreposição considerável com alguns dos campos menos restritos da teoria arquitetônica.
