Elaiosome
Os elosossomas são estruturas carnudas que são unidas às sementes de muitas espécies de plantas. O elaiosoma é rico em lipídios e proteínas, e pode ser de forma variada. Muitas plantas têm elaiosomes que atraem formigas, que levam a semente ao seu ninho e alimentam o elaiosome às larvas. Depois que as larvas consumiram o elaiosoma, as formigas levam a semente para a área de eliminação de resíduos, que é rica em nutrientes do corpo de formigas e cadáveres, onde as sementes germinam. Este tipo de dispersão de sementes é denominado myrmecchory da "formiga" grega e da "dispersão". Esse tipo de relação simbiótica parece ser mutualista, mais especificamente o mutualismo dispersivo de acordo com Ricklefs, R.E., pois a planta beneficia porque suas sementes são dispersas em locais de germinação favoráveis e também porque é plantada pelas formigas. Os elosossomas se desenvolvem de várias maneiras, quer a partir de tecidos de sementes, quer de tecidos de frutos. As várias origens e caminhos de desenvolvimento, aparentemente, servem a mesma função principal, isto é, atraindo formigas.
