Eletrostática
A eletrostática é um ramo da física que lida com os fenômenos e as propriedades das cargas elétricas estacionárias ou de movimento lento sem aceleração. Desde a antiguidade clássica, sabe-se que alguns materiais como o âmbar atraem partículas leves depois de esfregar. A palavra grega para âmbar, ήλεκτρον electron, foi a fonte da palavra "eletricidade". Os fenômenos eletrostáticos surgem das forças que as cargas elétricas exercem um sobre o outro. Tais forças são descritas pela lei de Coulomb. Embora as forças induzidas eletrostaticamente parecem ser bastante fracas, a força eletrostática entre e. um elétron e um próton, que juntos compõem um átomo de hidrogênio, são cerca de 36 ordens de magnitude mais fortes do que a força gravitacional que atua entre eles. Existem muitos exemplos de fenômenos eletrostáticos, daqueles tão simples quanto a atração do invólucro plastico à sua mão depois de removê-lo de uma embalagem, à explosão aparentemente espontânea de silos de grãos, ao dano de componentes eletrônicos durante a fabricação, à operação de fotocopiadoras. A eletrostática envolve o acúmulo de carga na superfície dos objetos devido ao contato com outras superfícies.
